Located in northern Australia, Cape York is a global biodiversity and cultural hotspot. With unique and diverse Indigenous and contemporary history, vast savannahs, rainforest, floodplains and escarpments the Cape is recognised as one of the Earth’s last wilderness areas. Every year people arrive from across the Earth to experience this remarkable part of our planet, where the patterns of life continue as they have done for millions of years.
The Cape is also an ideal location to continue low impact, sustainable agriculture. In fact, the pastoral industry on the Cape represents an incredibly important part of Australian history and underpins the livelihoods of many families. But the threat of industrialization of Cape York is real and increasing, and in recent years tens of thousands of hectares of ancient woodlands have been cleared by bulldozers linked with massive chains. With these destructive, short-term land use activities all the wilderness values are also cleared – the cultural markers, the evolutionary potential of the landscapes and any possibility to create diverse economic revenues for the communities.
